| What your favorite recipe for cole slaw? Best one I ever tried (but I've since lost the recipe, dammit) was out of Food & Wine circa 1990-91. Had the usual mayo-cream base, plus lemon juice and a little bit of curry powder.

| Do you like vinegar based slaws? I have an awesome Carolina Coleslaw recipe - incredibly simple- that people go NUTS over. Our family has a huge pig roast every year and even if we cater the pig roast (which we did once since it was in conjunction with a wedding reception), I have to make the homemade slaw. It is insane.

I went and found the recipe just in case you wanted it:
Carolina Coleslaw
Ingredients
1/2 head red cabbage, finely shredded
1/2 head green cabbage, finely shredded
1 medium Vidalia onion, finely diced
1 medium red pepper, sliced thin
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup canola oil
1 teaspoon celery seed
Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper
Method
Using a large bowl, toss together cabbages, onion, and red pepper, set aside.
Using a small saucepan over medium high heat, combine vinegar, sugar, and canola oil. Bring to a boil and pour over vegetables in the bowl. Add celery seed, season with salt and pepper. Toss to coat vegetables. Refrigerate several hours or overnight before serving.

| I'm not a big fan of the mayo-based recipes. So I like an Asian-inspired slaw with vinegar. Shredded cabbage, carrot and granny smith apple, sliced scallions and red pepper, rice wine vinegar, grated ginger, sesame oil, chilli flakes and sesame seeds. Chiffonade of thai basil when I can find it, and cilantro. Also makes a good stir fry with a protein added in.

Josie and joev, thanks for those ideas! My girlfriend's from North Carolina, so she might really enjoy that Carolina slaw. It's got raw onion (which she hates) but if I tell her it's Carolina slaw that might distract her. The Asian slaw recipe sounds more like my favorite -- think I might actually try the stir-fry variation first!
As for my long-lost recipe, think I just need to get off my butt and head downtown to the Main Library. Their online catalog says they've got Food &Wine issues dating back to '83....
