Okay. Maybe it's not the most important tool in the kitchen, but a Sharpie marker is an absolute must-have in the kitchen. Because you always think you're going to remember the exact moment you opened that jar of pasta sauce or that tetra packed chicken stock, but you never do.

I'm quite fond of the retractable variety:

I love my kitchen sharpie! It's been especially useful since I got the foodsaver.

My related secret kitchen trick is to use masking tape to make labels on containers for freezing (I often initially freeze soup and stocks in Jeni's ice cream containers, and it is almost 90% certain that I'll forget what they were before they make it to the foodsaver.) Masking tape peels off very easily, unlike whatever my partner's mom uses to label things.
