| What cooking/food magazines inspire you? I'm always on the lookout for some fun browsing to do on a Sunday morning at the coffee shop. I usually take a Gourmet magazine with me, but I can only stretch one issue a month out so long. I really like the international nature of the menus they suggest and have had really good success trying them out at home. Any recommendations?

I get really tired of the adverts in Gourmet. These days, I really enjoy the mags from down under; although it's a little strange because their summer issue, full of cherry & bbq recipes, is the Christmas issue. It's a little weird. I like Donna Hay, Dish, and Olive. The only problem is they are around $10US. However, the recipes always seem to be straightforward, the photography is great, etc. I also like Savuer, even if they put canned peas in their top 100 a few years ago... _________________ http://www.restaurantwidow.com

Being a comfort food junkie (and a tech writer by trade), I favor mags like Cook's Illustrated and Cooks Country, with their compulsive documentation of the trial-and-error process whereby they arrived at the end-result recipe. Oh, and I like Saveur too, for the pictures.

What about when those ads are for our fair state? This month's Gourmet had a two-page Ohio ad!

The Fair?! Does that seem strange or is it just me? Every year I say I'm going to blog the fair, but I never do. Maybe I'll do it along with my first Spam-Eating experiment. _________________ http://www.restaurantwidow.com

| I recently picked up a copy of Saveur while eating at North Star and really enjoyed it. They seem to focus on local cuisines and traditions (picture of typical Thai open air market) and cooking techniques and tools (explanation of Japanese knives--they even have a knife explicitly for octopus!). I found it refreshing from Food and Wine, which I currently have a subscription of, as they often have a snobby feel to them (recently doing a story about a high end resort in Africa....instead of a peice on authentic African food...) Anyhow, I'd recommend Saveur!! Also, yeah, Cooks Illustrated for the lack of advertising.
